'Tis the season for children with sniffling noses and contagious coughs. Oh how frustrating it is to want to soothe our children without using harmful chemicals to combat those pesky germs. It can seem quite overwhelming when searching for natural remedies but fear not, as I always say, there is an oil for that! It is important that when using oils on those precious little souls to do thorough research on the use of essential oils on children. If your child is under the age of 10 or suffering any underlying medical conditions please speak to a licensed medical physician prior to the use of essential oils. A few weeks ago my young one was battling a cold and I immediately started to research solutions. Here are a few great ways I have found to use essential oils to soothe children with colds this winter...
Common Cold Symptoms
Many essential oils such as Eucalyptus, Lavender, Cinnamon, Clove, Lemon, and Thyme all help prevent the growth of viruses. If you own a soapstone diffuser you can combine equal parts of these oils to a small amount of purified water. Use this remedy for 3-4 days to keep germs and bacteria from spreading around the house.
Don't have a room diffuser? No worries, add 1 drop of Eucalyptus, Lavender, Clove, Thyme, and Cinnamon to your child's diffuser necklace or bracelet to help keep their symptoms in check!
Stuffy Nose? No problem!
Add 6 drops of Eucalyptus and 4 drops of Lavender over a tissue and breathe deeply for a few minutes to relieve congestion.
Can't stop the Cough? Try this!
Make a simple balm/rub by combining 1 tablespoon of coconut oil with 8 drops of Eucalyptus, 5 drops of Lavender, and 2 drops of Thyme. Eucalyptus is very effective in battling congestion and coughs, while Thyme is a natural antiviral source. Lavender is also great at fighting viruses and bacteria as well as helping you relax. Don't forget, Eucalyptus should NOT be used on children under the age of 10.
Have no worries, in just a few days your young one will be back to running circles around you. Do you have any essential cold remedies you would like to share? Comment below!
